Epigomphus tumefactus (Lowland Knobtail)

If ever there was a common name that I have trouble writing, this must be it; “Knobtail” indeed. Costa Rica apparently has 13 of this delightfully named genus.

You have to look carefully at the male appendages on the “knobtail” to distinguish various very similar species. The cerci (upper appendages) on this character are “arched outward then bent inward”. I have five slightly varying views of the same single specimen. It’s a magnificent looking dragonfly once you get beyond the common name.
